Eliza Coupe
Eliza Kate Coupe was born on April 6, 1981. She is an American comedian, actress, model and comedian. Her roles include Jane Kerkovich-Williams on ABC’s comedy series Happy Endings, Denise “Jo” Mahoney on Scrubs’ final two seasons, Tiger on Hulu’s comedy series Future Man, and Hannah Wyland in Quantico. In 2022, she starred in Fox’s comedy Pivoting.
Early life
Coupe was born in Plymouth, New Hampshire, to Ernest and Kathryn. She has two brothers, Sam and Thom. She graduated from Plymouth Regional High School in 1999. She is of Scottish, English, and French heritage.
Coupe was involved in the theatre program at her high school. She played Bonnie in Anything Goes and a Mundy sister in Dancing at Lughnasa. 2006, she graduated from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
Career
Coupe studied improvisational comedy at The Groundlings and ImprovOlympic, and in 2003, she toured France as a soldier in an all-female King Lear version. Her one-woman sketch show, The Patriots, premiered at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre on November 5, 2005. It won her the Breakout Performer Award from HBO’s U.S. In March 2006, she hosted the Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.
She appeared in 2007’s I Think I Love My Wife and debuted in Short Circuit, a short-lived MTV series featuring her. She also appeared in episode 8 of Flight of the Conchords’ “Girlfriends” and an episode of Unhitched. She was a regular on HBO’s 12 Miles of Bad Road and a recurring character in Samantha Who?
She played Dr. Denise “Jo” Mahoney in Season 8 of Scrubs and was named a regular in Season 9.
Coupe was cast in March 2009 as Callie on the ABC pilot No Heroics. This adaptation of the UK series was filmed in Shanghai, China. She was the lead female role and the love interest of Daniel Henney in Shanghai Calling in 2012. The film was filmed in Shanghai, China. She was also in the 2011 film What’s Your Number? With Anna Faris and Chris Evans.
From April 2011 to May 2013, Coupe was a star on ABC’s ensemble comedy series Happy Endings alongside Elisha Cuthbert and Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally, and Damon Wayans Jr. The show was canceled by ABC on May 3, 2013, despite critical acclaim. It also gained a cult following. After Happy Endings was canceled, she played a recurring part in the third season of House of Lies. She also starred with Jay Harrington on the comedy series Benched. It premiered on October 28, 2014. Later, she starred as Hannah Wyland, the FBI agent in Quantico on ABC.
Coupe also played Tiger in Future Man, a comedy series on Hulu that premiered on November 14, 2017. The third and final season aired in 2020.
She was cast in April 2020 as Amy on Fox’s comedy series Pivoting. The show debuted on January 9, 2022, to positive reviews. However, it was canceled after just one season.
Personal life
From December 2007 to June 2013, Coupe married Randall Whittinghill, an actor and puppeteer.
On November 27, 2014, she posted an Instagram announcement about her engagement to Darin Olien (founder of lifestyle brand SuperLife). They got married on December 24, 2014, while they were on vacation in New Zealand.
Coupe was diagnosed in childhood with ADHD and dyslexia.
